Diabolic Rites (Australia)
T: Why the name Diabolic Rites ? Any special meaning and who chose it?
DR: Diabolic Rites was named by our vocalist and infernal bassplayer, Blödgris, with the vision of filthy sadistic black metal in mind, I feel he did well with matching the name to our music as it is the Devil's rituals.
T: What bands and styles have influenced you since you decided to form the band?
DR: We are influenced by many bands across different genres. The main ones are Black Metal, which I myself have loved, played & listened to for 30+ years...Bands such as, Tsjuder, Urgehal, Beastcraft, Marduk, Wergoat, Goathammer(CA), Beherit, Thornspawn, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Bathory, Sodom, Venom, Possessed as well as Outlaw punk maniac's GG.Allin, Kettle Cadaver and Exploited add that dirty fucking punk element to our list of influences... outside of this we are into many other styles...
T: What do you hope to achieve with your musical proposal when they are heard in other countries through out the world?
DR: Our mission with our music is to craft gritty raw metal that resonates with us! Pure enlightenment through violent & vengeful Satanic hymnyhs!
As far as the rest of the world, if it aligns with others it's done it's job!
T: Why did they enter the world of metal and what keeps them motivated?
DR: Personally I've been involved in the Metal scene since the late 80's and hit skins for bands such as Sadistik Exekution, Hobbs Angel of Death, Destroyer 666 (two tracks first album), along with Death metal maniacs, Abramelin and Cemetery URN and noise Lords- Grave Temple (Sunno) guitarist Steven O'Malley and MAYHEM/Tormentor vocal highpreist Attila Csishar)
The other members, Blödgris has a long history of playing in bands such as Iron Wörzel & Funeral Moon, and Mütilatör has his awesome solo project band Elysian Blaze! With decades of collective experience, we've all stayed motivated and inspired regardless of time...
T: How would you define your music?
DR: Diabolic Rites music is centered around, total hatred and disdain for the world in general! Luciferian curses vomitted forth in chants of filthy abhorration, and an offering of pure annihilation, hex majik, and feral black metal...summed up as 'Raw & filthy sadistic black metal'
T: Who is in charge of the art for your CD."Litanies of the Lecherous" and CD."Raw Black Satanic Attack" ?
DR: The Litanies album artwork was executed by a friend of ours, Mr.James Ozzy Osman, whom is an exj loocellent artist & tattooer also. He has done some great tattooing for me.
The Raw Black Satanic Attack artwork was done by myself.. I've been doing art my whole life and this was something I'd been conjuring for a while! The concepts came with the lyrics I was also writing for the album and culminated in the finished product!
T: What can you tell me about the experience of recording your CD."Raw Black Satanic Attack" ?
DR: The recording of Raw Black Satanic Attack was a great thing for myself. It was late 2020 and I'd built my own drum studio in my house.. The room took me quite a while to work on due to sound proofing and aesthetics.. the room was completely black, creating a savage darkness to match the mood I was looking to capture! The recording of the drums was fully completed within one session roughly around 7hrs. There's a Slayer cover, Die By the Sword I tracked that day we are yet to release.. All up, it was a summoning of filthy demons upon a shrine of skins, freshly flayed in Hell! I become Possessed by the spirit of Pazuzu and the drums are the fucking ñ which the blood runs through like a river of black retribution! Blödgris & Mütilatör individually tracked bass/guitars and vocals at their houses.. Mütilatör mixed the album and achieved a very well balanced result, clarity, rawness and a savage, sonically organic production.
T: What are the lyrics of your CD'S."Litanies of the Lecherous" and "Raw Black Satanic Attack" about?
DR: The lyrics cover all types of twisted & perverse topics.. Ultimately it is a immersion of filthy sadistic black metal, so Demon worship, depraved murder and Satanic sex rituals are rife amongst the lyrics...
However, I wrote the lyrics to a track called 'Corpsewax' which is a tribute to real life French maniac, 'Nicklaus Claux', Necrofiend, 'The Vampire of Paris'. When I was drumming/ touring Europe with Attila Csishar/Steven O'Malley/Oren Ambarchi under the name 'GRAVETEMPLE' in 2008 we recorded a live album in Paris, France. After the show Attila introduced me to his friends from old school Death black band, ARKHON INFAUSTUS, who said I need to meet a friend who is infamous.. This was Nicklaus Claux.... He was a polite and friendly person!
He invited us to go back to his place for drinks... it was rather surreal!! So, I wrote the track for Raw Black Satanic Attack...
The main focus is violent Satanic old school black metal.
T: Why are most of the songs on this CD."Litanies of the Lecherous" under 3 minutes, unlike on the next CD."Raw Black Satanic Attack" where most of them are over 8 minutes long?
DR: We had a line-up change after the first album. Litanies was more straight forward, raw & punk elements.. For Raw Black, we were writing more transcendental parts that go for alot longer and achieve a sense/state of trance like pure annihilation.. Guitarist Mütilatör, raised the bar with his writing and it was an evolution that seemed to be perfect!
T: What did you think of your latest CD, "Raw Black Satanic Attack"? I perceive a very marked technical evolution in the sound, maintaining its Cruel and Brutal Black Metal essence, compared to the CD "Litanies of the Lecherous," where I hear a dirtier, rawer, more brutal, and darker old-school Black Metal sound. What are your thoughts on this?
DR: Definitely! Originally we were focussed alot on that filthy punk element but we wanted to add new elements like war metal for instance which we use on Raw Black!
I like the mixture of these elements including that dirty Death Metal influence and fusing primitive punk savageness!
T: Which do you prefer writing lyrics or music?
DR: I like both the writing music & the lyrics.. I get inspiration in waves like something is sending me messages when lyric writing, it's almost automatic like a conduit and have written more than half an album's lyrics in 4-5hrs..
Music is the collective effort to put it all together and make it cohesively flow as it should!
Song writing is a great process when it all comes together and the elements sound right..
T: What inspired you to write the lyrics for the songs "Necroreich" and "Filthy Fucking Spirit"
DR: NECROREICH is about Diabolic Rites metaphorically as a force, an army of rabid demons ready to murder anything that gets in our way... It's about fighting against weakness, hypocrisy, a lame world full of mediocrity and ridiculous false values and milquetoast woke fallacies and the lies of the mainstream world!! It's about standing strong and smashing these fucking narcissistic clowns and standing above all the bullshit!!! ALL HAIL THE NECROREICH!!
FILTHY FUCKING SPIRIT is about exactly that.... the inspiration came from some personal experiences with spirits/entities.... I had a ghost breathing in my fucking ear and doing things in my house back in the early 90's... something malevolent and made itself known to me. It was clearly wanting attention. It even shattered a stationary heavy based drinking glass into hundreds of tiny schards & moved objects in front of my eyes.. Around 2013 I had a black shadow man figure float down a path in my backyard which sent chills up my spine.. the feeling was beyond a mere supernatural event it was clear as fucking day...so I wrote this track about these spirits!
T: What is the relationship between the CD."Litanies of the Lecherous" and the CD."Raw Black Satanic Attack"?
DR: Litanies is the Malignant Prince of Filth and Raw Black is the Gateway to the Infernal Abyss... two albums that take raw metal seriously.
T: What significance does it represent for your CD."Raw Black Satanic Attack" cover and who is in charge of the art?
DR: The Unholy Trinity on the front cover art for Raw Black Satanic Attack represents each band member, Blödgris, Demoninacht & Mutilator united!! I did this piece of art along with the rest of Raw Black's visual concepts..
T: What has it been like for the band to work as an Independent Record Label and self-produce your own CDs? You only received support from Davao Hellbangers Productions to record 66 cassettes? (It's unbelievable, shit.). You haven't received the support you expected from a Record Label?
DR: We've had contact with a few labels but we wanted to put it out independently.. We never pushed it too hard in that respect but it is something we would consider in future.
T: How did you manage to record your magnificent vinyl LP, "Litanies of the Lecherous," not only musically but also in the cover art design, without the support of a record label?
DR: We self recorded the Litanies album's drum tracks in Blödgris' loungeroom in a few hours, it was a great process! Guitars & vocals were all done at home, and the sound engineering shared by both Blödgrisj & Dodsdrakt...
The art was magnificently executed by a friend of ours, Adelaide tattoo artist, James Ozzy Osman who put together the cover art with our concepts. The orgy scene fit nicely with the album's overall rawness...
T: Have you contacted a Record Label for your third CD, Vinyl, or Cassette release?
DR: We pressed 300 units and there are about 50 left now.. this shit is underground, definitely no Dimmu Borgir.
I also find the scene is so fucking saturated, for the band to elevate it's status it is all about playing alot of shows both here & overseas....
T: What currently inspires the band Diabolic Rites to continue working in the Australian Underground Black Metal Scene?
DR: Diabolic Rites is in a hinatus state...Basically I made a decision to stand down from the live drumming and only record from this point on... Life, Family and nearly 4 decades behind the kit have created my personal decision to not play live....
T: What motivated you to venture into the world of metal and what keeps you motivated to continue?
DR: From an early age I was introduced to a bunch of hard rock & metal in the early 80's that formed a life long obsession for metal... Over the years it grew into far more extreme & sinister paths in the genre, taking in Death Metal, Punk, Thrash & Black Metal... We all continue to seek out new bands/albums/influences but personally most of the old school is what works for myself...
T: How did you like your latest CD. "Raw Black Satanic Attack"? I perceive a very technical evolution in the sound, and at the same time a crueler and more brutal sound compared to the CD "Litanies of the Lecherous." ¿What do you think about it?
DR: Litanies album was written with our first guitarist, Dodsdrakt, who had a very different writing approach, so we were playing most of these tracks somewhere around 3.30-4 minute tracks... Then Mütilatör came into Diabolic Rites and we spent more time collaborating with the crafting of each track to create something we were all very immersed in and felt was done in the right way. The results being alot longer tracks, up to a nearly 9 minute track, Raw Black....
T: How many copies have they made of your CD. "Raw Black Satanic Attack"? And how many copies have they sold?
DR: RAW BLACK SATANIC ATTACK was a pressing of 777 copies which to my knowledge has nearly sold out... I think there's roughly 75 left at this point...
T: What other bands in your Country Adelaide, a future projection on the local scene? ¿What other bands are around here friends of yours?
DR: The Adelaide scene has some magnificent bands! Some of my favourites are, Tzun Tzu, Oath of Damnation, Beyond Mortal Dreams, Cauldron Black Ram.
T: What can you tell us about the scene in Adelaide? Do you think it's less well-known than in other cities like Sydney or Melbourne in Australia? Especially considering they have a great black metal band like Diabolical Rites?
DR: I feel like Adelaide has a pretty decent extreme metal scene! There is great support for underground metal here! It may not have the numbers of Sydney & Melbourne but the passion & support in Adelaide is excellent! Yes, maybe the bigger cities can elevate your band to more audience but there is also alot more bands in those cities so maybe it all averages out well for most of the scene.. The Underground continues to thrive here...
T: What continues to motivate the band to stay active on the Australia and world extreme scene?
DR: Raw Black Satanic Attack is the evolution of the band's style, due to the Infernal playing of our guitarist, Mütilatör whom became our new member in 2018.. Blödgris & Mütilatör both wrote new material at the time that created a new perspective as well as myself introducing more 'war metal' drumming, barbaric elements and changing up on just straight forward raw Black metal by adding feral Death Metal and of course rabid punk savageness! We also went for the transcendental parts that create a whirlwind that takes you into a deeper state of mind with long blast sections and Satanic fury for a truly savage experience to the listener...
T: Would you like to come to South America someday for a tour? And be able to promote your music more? I'm hoping that some real tour manager will hear about you and bring you to play in South Americae. (You can count on the great support for the promotion of Diabolic Rites in "The Legion of TchorT" zine.)
DR: To tour South America would be a great honour and I'm sure the metalheads there would be killer to play to!!
As I've stopped playing live maybe another drummer could tour with my band mates and spread the Raw Black Satanic Attack in your city!!
T: What is the new thing that Diabolic Rites is preparing to record?
DR: Diabolic Rites is going to record a new album, I am hoping to record sometime in 2026 - 6 -6 ... I have a few working album titles...
We are also going to finish the Live album which was our last show in May 2025... We professionally recorded this performance & look forward to releasing it sometime this year also....
T: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer the interview for “The Legion Of TchorT” 'Zine. Any last words for our reader's? Where can our readers get merchandise from your band? ¿Any news?
DR: Satanic Hails to you Lord Tchort!! Thankyou for your support and for this interview!!
Yes, I will be putting Diabolic Rites merch up for sale on my Blast Abyss Bandcamp page sometime shortly so look out for that!! HAILS TO THE TRUE FUCKING UNDERGROUND, WE RAISE A CHALICE FOR YOU LORD TCHORT!!
