Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus (Usa)

Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus (Usa)

T: Hi Mika, Why did you choose the band name Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus?

M: Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus is Finnish for “nihilistic barbarism”, a philosophical concept I read about in “The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality” by French philosopher André Comte-Sponville (our newest release – the ‘Madness Incarnate’ EP – has a track called “Comte-Sponville” in his honor).  The other band founder (Manuel Rodriguez) and I decided to go with Finnish instead of English or Swedish because it suggested a strong connection to Finnish/Nordic culture, as well as just sounded better.

T: (is) the style you play ambient black metal?

M: I still consider the band ambient black metal generally, but if you compare the first LP ‘Synkkä Tuuli’ to ‘Madness Incarnate’ I think it’s clear the band has developed with regard to both production and musical style.  The first few releases were straightforward raw atmospheric black metal, similar to Paysage D’Hiver and Velvet Cacoon, whereas the last LP ‘The Child Must Die’ took the first big steps toward elevating production quality while becoming more progressive.  With ‘Madness Incarnate’ I decided to experiment with doom and death metal riffing, a direction I plan to continue upon.

T: Your last production (album) is called “the child must die”. How has the feedback been from magazines, reviewers and your fans.

M: TCMD came out in April of 2015 on Infernal Kommando Records, and the reviews were mainly positive.  Prior to TCMD the releases were routinely criticized for being lofi, something I felt was unfair as it was essentially criticizing raw music for being raw.  However, having better access to studio equipment alleviated much of this with TCMD, and now with the release of ‘Madness Incarnate’ I can confidently state the critical response has become overwhelmingly positive, much more so than anticipated even.

T: “The Kalevala or The Kalewala Finnish: is a 19th-century work of epic poetry by Elias Lonnrot from Karelian and Finish oral folklore and mythology. It is regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala played an instrumental role in the development of the Finnish national identity, the intensification of Finland's language strife and the growing sense of nationality that ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917.”
Is “the child must die” CD based on this subject? Our followers would like to know, why this subject was chosen for this album.

M: TCMD is conceptually based entirely on The Kalevala, to the extent that all the song lyrics (with the exception of the title-track) were taken verbatim from an English-language translation/interpretation.  Originally I intended to write all original songs, but since The Kalevala is a poem to begin with I ultimately felt silly writing poetry about a poem, and since nothing I could come up with would ever surpass the legendary prose of The Kalevala, I decided rather to adapt the existing text instead.  As to my reason for selecting The Kalevala to begin with, my aim was to utilize my musical ability to contribute to the culture of my ancestral homeland while strengthening my own ties in the process.

T: How has it been working with Infernal Komando Records, you guys used to work with Horror Gore Death Productions. What happened?

M: I’ve never been contracted with a label to make multiple albums, always just one at a time.  This is good in a sense because it leaves open the possibility to network with other companies, but is also bad because there is no consistency and “shopping” for labels can be very stressful.  When it came to TCMD, I had already developed a relationship with Infernal Kommando Records since they previously released ‘Synkkä Tuuli’ & the follow-up EP ‘Väinämöinen’ on cassette.  For ‘Madness Incarnate’, I was aided by great friend of the band Miloš Anić (NB’s unofficial manager at the time) who put me in contact with Satanath Records in Ukraine.  Satanath offered to release the EP on their sub-label, Symbol of Domination Productions, as a co-production with Black Lion Productions in Sweden.  Between the two labels they were able to cover all production costs, a major benefit I am very thankful for.

T: The Album art for “The Child Must Die” was created by Luciana Nedelea.  What is the concept and meaning of the CD's album art.

M: All the art is based on The Kalevala.  For instance, one panel is the battle with Pohyola for the Sampo (a magical item which brings good fortune), whereas another is either Kullervo’s sister or Aino drowning themselves.  Luciana is an amazing artist and I strongly recommend anyone looking for album art or logo design to visit http://www.facebook.com/LucianaNedeleaArt.

T: You also have another band called Lawrence's Creation that released a CD called “Drop Zone” . It's very different from Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus. What can you tell us about this project.

M: Lawrence’s Creation was a band I joined as bassist for one album; it was begun by Lawrence Wallace (ex-Serpent ov Old, ex-Shadows in the Crypt) – a talented multi-instrumentalist (he was guest keys on some NB releases) – to showcase his virtuosity on guitar, and I joined basically to help structure some songs and manage the project so as to get the material released.  Ultimately we put out an album, ‘Drop Zone’, on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions, after which I left to focus on NB.

T: What bands have influenced the sound of the band? Can you name a few bands?

M: When Manuel and I first began playing our general influences were other raw atmospheric acts like Paysage d’Hiver, Velvet Cacoon, and Dark Space.  Manuel also had personal influences he put into his riffing such as Graveland, Hate Forest, and Horna (on ‘Synkkä Tuuli’ I wrote my riffs to complement his, so my personal influences weren’t so much in play).  Once Manuel left (following the release of ST) my influences became more prominent in the music as I’m much more into progressive bands like Enslaved, Naglfar, Old Man’s Child, and Rotting Christ.

T: What else would you like to say to the readers and followers of The Legion Of TchorT Zine?

M: I’d just like to say thank you for all the support thus far, and please listen to our most recent EP ‘Madness Incarnate’ anyway you can!  It is available from Satanath Records/Symbol of Domination Productions, Black Lion Productions, iTunes, Amazon, and Bandcamp!

T: Where can you get Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus y Lawrence´s Creation merch?

M: We have NB albums and t-shirts available from our Bandcamp https://nihilistinenbarbaarisuus.bandcamp.com,  as well as on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/nihilistinenbarbaarisuus or http://www.nbmetal.net; LC has CDs available through HPGD at http://www.horrorpaingoredeath.com/store/hpgd090.html.

T: Thanks for all Mika.

Astarium (Russia)

T: Infernal greetings SiN!! When and how did the idea to form Astarium?

SiN: Hail, TchorT! Idea about ego-black metal project has visited me in 2001, but I wasn’t good instrumentalist and hadn’t good skill of playing on guitar. This fact didn’t give me possibility to embody my idea into life in that time. During the following years I've played, acquired skill and experimented with sound. In 2005 I’ve recorded track “Morannon” in which the leading role was executed by keyboards on the same level as the guitar. And I’ve understood that this style is what I searched! At this moment Astarium was born.

T: Why is Astarium name? Do any special meaning?

SiN: Heh, I wanted to call project - Astaroth, but I’ve found many bands with this name. So Astarium is just product of my imagination without any idiographic meanings.

T: Do you always perform all the instruments and voice in all of your productions?

SiN: Yes, there are just guitar and sampler. In some tracks I’ve used guimbarde, and now I’m amassing such material to make experimental compilation in future. About voice, I’ve used deep-chested voice and low screaming. On upcoming album you can hear whisper, because this type of vocal is much better conjoining with atmosphere of some tracks.

T: SiN, here are all your accomplishments, many in different formats and different labels. We have from a Brutal Black Metal to a Symphonic / Ambient. Can you tell us more about each production?

SiN:

“Monolith of Abysses” (Demo 2006) – first demo in raw symphonic black metal style, recorded under impression of H.P. Lovecraft’s novels, self-released (CDr) at first and re-released on “Northern Point Records” (Pro-CDr). Now is available only by “Dominion of SiN” like hand-made CD and tape.

“On the Edge of Chasm” (Full-length 2008) – album in raw symphonic black metal style, that included new songs and, recomposed and re-recorded with better sound, material from previous demo. Released by “Satanarsa Records” (pro-CDr), Apocalyptic Art (pro-tape), Heerwegen Tod Productions (pro-CDr with big booklet), Wulfrune Worxxx (hand-made tape) and self-released as promo (pro-CDr with big booklet).

“Winter Growths (Part I)” (Demo 2009) – experimental demo in ambient / neo-classic style, dedicated to winter themes. Released by NitroAtmosfericum Records (pro-CDr), Acclaim Records (CDr), Snail Prod (pro-CDr with bonuses), Wulfrune Worxxx (hand-made tape) and Tryby label (pro-tape).

“Katuar” (Split 2009) – combined album with Moscow industrial black metal / dark ambient band uRAn 0, my project presented middle tempo symphonic black metal. Materials of both hordes are demo-versions of tracks that will be included in future albums. Released by NitroAtmosfericum / Satanarsa Records (pro-CDr), Thorn Laceration Records (pro-tape) and Smell The Stench (CDr).

“Dethroned of Impostor” (Full-length 2010) – second album in symphonic black metal style, material for it I’ve recorded during 2 years. This album is my pride! Released by Victory By Fire (black-CDr), Apocalyptic Art (pro-tape), Margin Art Records (CD with big booklet), Wulfrune Worxxx (hand-made tape) and self-released as promo (pro-CDr with big booklet).

“Invasion to Forbidden” (EP 2011) – mini-album about confrontation between stupidity of human and power of nature, included 2 re-mastered tracks from second album and Burzum cover. Released by Akne Prod (hand-made tape), Tryby label (pro-CDr with special box) and NitroAtmosfericum Records (pro-CDr).

“Tribute - The Heart of a Dog” (Split 2011) – combined single with dark ambient / noise project Spasm Of Charity, dedicated to cognominal novel of M. Bulgakov. Astarium presented ambient / neo-classic track. Released by NitroAtmosfericum Records (pro-mCDr with special hand-made sleeve), IndieLabel (net-release) and Wulfrune Worxxx (hand-made tape).

“Ostracism of Anachoret” (EP 2011) – unplanned mini-album included tracks created in 2007, half in ambient style and half in raw symphonic black metal. Self-released at first and re-released by Tryby label (pro-tape), soon will be released by Niberu Records (pro-tape and pro-CDr) and as split by Eastern Myth Records (pro-CDr).

T: Will third full-length album sound like The CD “On the Edge of Chasm” and CD “Dethroned of Impostor”? Are you working under new songs for the third CD? Do any progress?

SiN: Yes, I’m working under new album, named “Wyrm”. Musical part is ready now and I’m recording vocals. The material for third album has many distinctions in comparison with the previous two albums. Most powerful difference is style – symphonic depressive black metal with doom, drone and dark ambient influence. Music will be minimalistic and will sound in middle-slow tempo. Lyrics are presented by themes about suicides happened under inspiration of winter and autumn. This album is not just experiment, but part of my life which I want to perpetuate in music. After this record I’m planning to make return to old-school symphonic black metal with new hate and evil!

T: The sound Symphonic / Ambient shown full in "Winter Growths (Part I)". How was born idea to venture with this style?

SiN: In fact, my ambient music is the same Astarium’s symphonic black metal, but only played without guitars and arranged otherwise. So I can not say that I’m venturing with this style. Many bands used this concept, when creative work is splitting on different ways, conjuncted by one idea. In 2009 I’ve made first only ambient release “Winter Growths (Part I)”, because I have recorded many rehearsals during previous years in this style. It'll be pity to lose this material. In next winter I’ll continue this series with second part of “Winter Growths”.

T: What bands have influenced on the fate of Astarium?

SiN: There are Burzum, Eisenwinter, Kataxu, Nokturnal Mortum, Darkthrone, Bal-Sagoth.

T: How is the Black Metal scene in Russia? What bands can you recommend?

SiN: To tell the truth, I am not especially informed about our scene. For me, really interesting bands plays in total underground and I don’t like most of hordes, released on big russian labels.  My favorite bands are Veretragor, Ghornumn, Gmork, Kabalah, uRAn 0, Necrolatreia, Flegethon.

T: “Dominion Of SiN” is your label and distributor that you've created. What production do you have in production by Dominion Of SiN and distribution? Prices? And where can you buy? Can you tell us more about it?

SiN: “Dominion Of SiN” is small DIY label, born to make last re-releases of old Astarium’s materials and distribute stuffs of project released on other labels. So fans can order some rare releases from me, just wrote letter on my email (astarium@mail.ru or sin@astarium.ru). Prices are most lower-income – not more 3 euros or 4 usd. At moment label have only 1 release – DIY CD and tape “Monolith of Abysses” in one package, but soon during this year will out another materials on tapes and CD with exclusive design.

T: SiN, would you like to add anything else to The Legion Of TchorT Zine? Where our readers can get your music?

SiN: Check my site –  http://www.astarium.ru  you can find page of my label there, and more information about labels that released my stuffs and other, other, other. Also, you can listen my music online through last fm net-radio.
Thank you, TchorT, for interesting questions! Stay metal, Friend!
To readers I can say: Carry your Black Flame with honor!

T: Thanks War Brother SiN for all the support and friendship given, I hope we will soon have "The Legion Of TchorT" Compilation I to XII in Tape format for "Dominion Of Sin" Label.

Deviator (Ukraine)

Way Of Warriors - Hymn To Immortals
Glorious North Productions 2011

From the cold Ukraine comes this one man, Lord Hastner project with a great compilation, a collection of tracks spanning Deviator’s career, old, rare and featuring a track exclusive to this release.
Guest musicians on this release include Pr.Sergiy of Moloch & Alexander of Winter Depression, about the music, drum beats range from slow to mid peace and those combined with the synths creates a really dark and cold and deppresive ambient and with the low bass tones seems like a funeral.
The guitar is pretty primitive and there aren't any solos along the CD except for the last track, some accoustic guitars can be find in the album just to enhance the darkness of the music.
The voice are really grim and have a depressive sounding edge at times with a brief use of spoken word parts.
The production is raw and primitive but I think is the correct for this production, something more clear will not fit in this kind of material.
In total 14 tracks which for sure will fill that gap in your collection because earlier productions are almost impossible to find, so this is a great option.
All in all is a great CD worth to buy!!

Moloch / Deviator / Begotten
On the stub of fate new life will not grow
Deleting Souls Records
CD Split 2011

A three way split of this great bands/projects, all of them from Ukraine in a 500 limited edition CD as well as in tape format; what we find is a great mix of black/death, pagan and deppresive metal, in total 10 tracks.
The split is opened by Moloch with 4 tracks of cold and deppresive music, you can feel the cold wind and snow in your face, full of sounds, synths, low tones... slow and mid sounds makes Moloch part something amazing.
The second band is Deviator, Black Death with 3 tracks, a one man project with synths and mid, low tones and grim voices, not as cold as Moloch but great project.
Begotten, they take their name of that obscure movie, no so atmospheric buty more paganism here, black metal with a lot of paganism, the band music is a real black ritual, distorted guitars, grim vocals, primitive drums.
A good split, worth to listen and buy it, it shows how cold music must be done.

Moloch (Ukraine)

Isolation der Essenz
Self Mutilation Services

6 tracks of black ambient metal and just over fifty minutes runtime... this album is an interesting one because it is a combination between black metal and atmospheric, the album is well balanced with stumbling bass a grim and distorted guitar tone and scarry voices, also, the synths sounds like a piano which creates a melancholyc atmosphere, The guitar/bass are played well but from time to time, the drumming wasn’t in sync with everything else
The last track "Isolation der Essenz," is a Dark Ambient tune unfolded in a more abstract way for about 25 minutes, it reminds me the old Burzum days, it’s all throbbing, sinister and bassy synth lines and dwells, yet there’s also a real grim sci-fi feel to the track too.
A good album but I think could be better.

Der Schein des Schwarzesten Schnees
Misanthropic Spirit

This is the 9th album of Moloch, was recorded since 2009 but saw the light until 2011, Moloch is a project of a single man and this album shows its feeling, a depressed sound , suicidal, an album where were we can find screeching guitars, drums not made by machine but by the same man who composed the music, the keyboards are combined with sounds of rain that creates a melancholic and depressive atmosphere , dark ... the riffs didn't have any structure, but creates a disturbing feeling.
The suffering, depression, sadness and pain offered by Moloch on this album is clearly seen throughout the album, Moloch really knows how to create this feeling cold and sad, probably does not create a new style but the atmosphere it creates is worth the CD .

Editor: Sadly they wanted to give an interview with this band, but says he does not give interviews to magazines on-line. I prefer to reserve my opinion.

Damnatur (Finland)

T: Hails Jaldabaoth, Why the name Damnatur? Does it have any meaning that you can explain?

Jaldabaoth: Damnatur means "to be damned". It's an old christian term for books that were comdemned by the church back in the medieval times. I just happened to come across the term at some point almost 10 years ago and decided it would suit the bands message well. Nothing special about it I guess. During the years i've heard of only one band by the same name. Finnish band as a matter of fact.

T: Your band's style is Ambient Black Metal, what bands have inspired you?
And what sort of bands do you usualy listen to?

Jaldabaoth: Burzum, Mortiis, Blut aus Nort... the list in endless. I think all the music and other artforms have had some impact on my work.

T: Damnatur is only a studio band? How long do you spend time rehearsing and recording?

Jaldabaoth: I started this band in 2005. But the idea of the band (and also some songs) is almost 10 years old. I spend more time on this project than before, mainly because now I have the time and energy that it requires. Also I've had great inspiration from the other bands that I am involved with.

T: Jaldabaoth, can you tell me more about your latest full-lenght CD.
“Antithesis I”. Can you tell us more about the songs? What does the album cover try to represent?

Jaldabaoth: The album is just a mix of some ideas which I had played with over the course of many years. I hardly think it will be the most solid work I will ever produce. Some songs were written right at the spot when I was recording and that shows. There is some pretty good stuff there too but overall I would do it again if I could. If you want a better look at the band, then try the demo "Saatanan Evankeliumi". The cover was made by a friend of mine and simply represents the gloomy feel of the songs.

T: Schwarzton Records is the label with which to launch your work, how about the support and promotion from them?

Jaldabaoth: Well I'm happy they have released Damnatur and Verdelt. But to be honnest, I haven't been in touch with them for quite a long time, mainly because i've been too busy with the other bands. We will see what happens. I haven't seen any major promotion on their behalf, but I don't mind. If the material is good, people will find it eventually.

T: How do you split the time between rehearsals and recordings, as well as concerts with your other bands bands: Verdelt and Graveborne?

Jaldabaoth: Graveborne takes most of my time and I'm happy with that. We have a good thing going on and when there are other people involved, it's only natural that you tend to focus on it more. Verdelt is a band with me and another guy so the process of writing and recording in pretty simple. Damnatur is for the late hours. I work on that whenever I have the spare time.

T: Is there the possibility of recruiting more people to your band Damnatur and perhaps concerts and tours to other countries?

Jaldabaoth: Absolutely not. This is purely my project and I intend to keep it that way. The good thing about this is that I don't have to make any compromises. If I succeed, then I can be happy with My work. It's almost like writing a book, I'd hate to share the credits of a desent job with anyone else. I guess it all comes down to my personal need of artistic freedom.

T: What can you tell us about the scene in Finland, what bands do you recommend?

Jaldabaoth: The scene is fairly small and everyone seems to know everyone. In a way that is a good thing cos' we can all support one another and arrange gigs together. Then again, the size of the scene also reflects the lack of opportunities to do any major tours. And you can also forget about making a living out of it, unless you happen to be in a band like Impaled Nazarene who have a solid fanbase all around the
world. There are many new and talented groups here at the moment. I can mention for instance Nox Ultima, Verhext and Sacrilegious Impalement. But there are many others as well.

T: Are you preparing new material? Can you tell us something about this?

Jaldabaoth: Yes I am. I'm working on an album by the name "Cotidie damnatur qui semper timet". It's going to be quite different from the previous things I have done. More down to earth, simple but devastating black metal. I'm using only bass guitars on this one, tuned low. I'm not exactly sure how it will all come together and how it will sound but I am aiming for the darkest and most violent piece I have ever made so far.

T: Bro, Some words for our readers of The Legion Of Tchort Zine? Can you say how to get Damnatur's merchandise?

Jaldabaoth: I might be printing some t-shirts after the new album but then again I might now, we'll see. Stay true to yourself and your values. Only support artists that are honnest and who give you neverending spiritual growth. Lay off the booze and cigarettes. Keep yourself healthy and powerful.

T: Thanks Jaldabaoth, for the interview and I hope soon to hear the new sound of the new disc with just the bass instrument will be brutal and heavy.

LHES: Oscuridad, paganismo, misticismo.

T: El primer LP.
