Scylla (Ireland)

T: Greetings brothers at Scylla. To start, why did you choose the name Scylla for the band?

A: The bands name come from Greek Mythology, from Odysseus's Journey, where he encounters two Monsters, One named Scylla and the other named Charybdis, both on opposite sides of a narrow channel of water. If Odysseus tried to get away from Scylla, he would move closer to Charybdis, and vice versa. I (Sohaib) am a big fan of Mythology myself, so that's where the name, Scylla, was chosen from.

T: So you guys have an album out already, called "Nascency". Could you tell us a little bit more about that?

A: The album "Nascency" was released last year, in April. The album deals with the theme "Hell". It gives my own perspective of what Hell would look like if I had to imagine it. The songs aren't linked, but they come under one concept. The title track, "Nascency", gives a description of what someone would see when the enter Hell, from my own point of view. If you read the lyrics of the song, you'll get a better picture. I started writing Nascency in 2012, and wrote all the music and lyrics myself. I recorded rough demos for all the tracks in 2012, and, once we got a full line-up, we went into the studio and recorded the album.

T: The sound of Scylla is Black Metal?

A: The core of Scylla is black metal indeed. We, however, tend not to follow the traditional black metal path. We like to experiment with the genre so we always like to make it sound different and unique while still retaining black metal in our music.

T: What bands influenced Scylla to have that sound?

A: You could say that bands like Emperor, Immortal, Gorgoroth etc. have had an influence on me myself, but Scylla's music is mainly influenced by Mythology, Nature and Atmosphere.

T: Do you guys rehearse one day a week?

A: We would love to practice once or twice a week, but the thing is that, we live a few hours away from each other, so we usually just practice in our own time, but we try and have a practice together whenever we get the oppurtunity. T: Who makes the lyrics and who defines the style of the song? A: I myself write the lyrics for the songs. As far as the style of the song goes, I like to write the lyrics the first and, based on what sort of message, feeling, mood and atmosphere exists in the lyrics, I create the music around that. It works the best that way for us I think.

T: I hear that you guys are working on your second album,"Bloodeagle"? Is there much work still left to be done? Can we expect a similar sound to "Nascency" from the new album?

A: Yes we're currently working on second album, "Bloodeagle". The writing process is pretty much finished. We're going to be starting the demoing process soon and, once that's complete, we'll be ready to hit the studio to record it. With regards to the sound of the new album, it will be quite different from Nascency. The new album will be a concept album, based on Norse Mythology, so it will definitely sound different from Nascency. We're really excited about getting it all done, and sharing it with you.

T. What can you tell us about the scene in Ireland?

A: There's quite a good metal scene in Ireland. Some great metal has come out of Ireland in the last few years! Bands like Eternal Helcaraxe, Celtachor, Dichotomy, and loads more, have produced some great, fresh music in last couple of years and there's still plenty more to come!

T: Do you have any concerts coming up? Are they only in Ireland or are you guys going to play abroad as well?

A: We were supposed to be playing at PhilFest festival at the end of June but, unfortunately, that festival was cancelled. We have an upcoming gig in Cork in September at some stage, so we're looking forward to that. We would love to play outside of Ireland some day, so whenever that day might be, we're really looking forward to it.
